A study from last year is making the rounds again because it ranked the hardest U.S. state names to spell. And this is based on Google search results from Americans.
The toughest states to spell are:
1. Hawaii
2. Pennsylvania
3. Connecticut
4. Georgia and Tennessee were tied for fourth.
5. Massachusetts
(Mississippi ranked #7 on the toughest list, but maybe it was helped by the M-ISS-ISS-IPPI song we all learned when we were kids.)
The study also looked at the states that were hardest for Americans to pronounce . . . and believe it or not, Arkansas took the top spot. A lot of people are still wondering why it's not pronounced like Kansas. Shouldn't it be "Ar-kan-ziss" and not "Ar-kan-saw"?
The next toughest state to pronounce was Nevada, because people can't stop saying "Ne-VAH-duh" instead of the preferred "Ne-VA-duh."
