How much would you spend to have peace of mind? That’s what a new survey asks 2-thousand adults across the country, and it turns out, it’s quite a bit of money.
In these times of economic uncertainty, as people are struggling to make ends meet, how much is their peace of mind worth? According to the survey, respondents have an average annual household income of about $79-thousand and they’d be willing to spend nearly three-quarters of it, around $57-thousand a year, for security and serenity.
- The biggest portion of that - an average of $21-thousand per year - would go toward always being able to get necessities, like groceries and medications.
- Never having to worry about losing their job comes in a close second at $19,800 (19-thousand 800).
- And they’d pay another $16,400 (16-thousand 400) a year to never have to worry about an expensive medical bill or copay.
- But a lot of Americans are already so maxed out, they barely have enough left after bills to save, let alone spend five figures on peace of mind.
- Nearly one in five (17%) say they’re financially anxious every single day during an average month.
- Over a quarter (28%) feel peace of mind is generally less attainable now than it was five years ago.
“We exist in an environment defined by economic uncertainty and political instability,” explains psychologist Dr. Jenny Martin. “Peace of mind has become psychologically equated with control, which feels harder and harder to find. The idea of ‘paying for peace of mind’ reflects a deeper desire to secure safety and predictability — relief from chronic vigilance.”
