On Saturday, 65-hundred volunteers came together at the Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina to build more than 10-thousand beds in just 24 hours for children who don’t have one of their own. Lowe’s employees worked alongside partners including Bank of America, Honeywell, Rebuilding Together, and the Charlotte Hornets in support of the charity Sleep in Heavenly Peace.
The Lowe’s 24-Hour Bed Build, which addressed a need affecting more than 140-thousand children across the country who are waiting for a bed, saw volunteers working in coordinated assembly lines, cutting, sanding, assembling, and finishing materials to transform 200 miles of lumber into 10,027 beds. The project used 2-thousand gallons of stain, more than 730-thousand screws, and nearly 18-thousand sanding discs.
By the end of the second annual event, the finished beds were ready to be delivered to 110 Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapters across 36 states. Participants describe their work in personal terms, with Lowe’s product manager Jenna Restrepo saying she thought about her own children while contributing. Medical director Dr. Douglas Kirsch points out that the beds are about more than just comfort. He says consistent, quality sleep affects children’s health and learning. The completed beds are now on their way to families to provide a place for children to sleep.
