On his way to work on Friday morning, New York City Police Detective Michael Greaney noticed a car racing along the shoulder of the highway and sensed something was wrong. After pulling the vehicle over, the driver urgently explained that his eight-month-old baby was choking. Without hesitation, Detective Greaney stepped in to help.
He gently lifted the baby from her car seat and delivered back blows, a technique used to clear a blocked airway. Moments later, with a cough and a cry, the baby started breathing again. A nurse who stopped to help confirmed the baby was stable and doing well.
After handing the baby back to her relieved father, Greaney encouraged him to learn first aid skills in case of future emergencies. The detective says he’s grateful that the baby is safe and that “she’s gonna be here for Christmas,” adding that moments like this happen more often in policing than people realize.
