A New Zealand woman is crediting her Apple Watch with alerting her to a serious health issue. Despite feeling tired and overheated, consultant psychiatrist Amanda Faulkner didn’t think much of it until her smartwatch began sending daily alerts about her unusually high resting heart rate. Normally at 55 bpm, her heart rate was reaching into the 90s, prompting her to visit her doctor.
After running tests, Amanda was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. Doctors told her that if she had waited another 48 hours, she might not have survived. She has since begun treatment, including chemotherapy and a planned stem cell transplant.
Amanda’s husband shares that her story has helped to encourage others to address their own health concerns or purchase similar devices. Strangers have visited her in the hospital to talk about their cancer experiences, giving Amanda a renewed sense of purpose while she’s unable to work. She’s now encouraging others, especially women, to trust their instincts and advocate for their own health.
