‘Tis the season for snuggling up on the couch with some eggnog and Christmas cookies and watching a festive flick. We all have our favorites, the ones we look forward to seeing every year, and a new survey reveals the most popular ones in the country.
- “Newsweek” asked 1,000 U.S. adults: “In your opinion, what are the best Christmas movies?”
- “Home Alone” leads the list, with 30% of respondents naming it their favorite.
- But it barely beats the number two answer, the 1966 classic “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” the top choice for 29%.
- Further down the list is a title sure to stir some debate, as many don’t believe it’s a Christmas movie at all, but 10% say “Die Hard” is the best.

Adam Paul, assistant professor in screen acting at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, says he’s not surprised “Home Alone” is the most popular pick, even decades after it first came out. “At nearly 35 years old, the film now hits the nostalgia button for most Gen Xers who watch with their kids,” he explains. “It squeezes in the satisfaction of a revenge thriller with some of the best physical comedy moments in the late 20th century cinema.”
