*LIST* THE BEST (& WORST) STATES FOR WORKING DADS

Today’s dads no longer fit into the old school standard of being the married breadwinner and disciplinarian. Nearly three quarters (72.7%) of married moms now work, but that’s still a lot less than the 94.1% of married fathers who work. And it turns out, some states make it a little easier for dads to be both a parent and provider.

  • Just in time for Father’s Day, WalletHub has come out with their annual list of the Best and Worst States for Working Dads.
  • They compared the 50 states and Washington, D.C. on 21 key indicators of friendliness toward working fathers in the areas of work-life balance, childcare, health and economic & social well-being.
  • This includes things like the average length of the workday for men, parental leave policies and the share of men in good or better health.
  • Based on all that, WalletHub names Massachusetts as the best state for working dads.
  • It comes in first in the work-life balance category, second for both childcare and health, and sixth for economic & social well-being.
  • Washington, D.C., second overall, is number one for childcare and economic & social well-being, while Hawaii is first for health.
  • At the bottom of the list is New Mexico, making it the worst state for working dads.
  • West Virginia is second to last, and Mississippi, Nevada and Oklahoma round out the bottom five.
