A new study has revealed that residents in Massachusetts have the highest average IQs.
The Human Intelligence Quotient, or IQ, has long been a measure of cognitive capabilities, with its scores offering insights into both individuals and larger populations. Research by the free online education platform Guru99.com analyzed the average IQ of every state to determine which US state is the smartest in relation to IQ.

Massachusetts has the highest average IQ in America with 104.3. Home to Harvard University as well as other high ranking schools its no surprise that this state excels when it comes to education and developing its residents intelligence.
New Hampshire is the second most intelligent state in America missing out by only 0.1; data shows that, on average, the state has an average IQ of 104.2.
Vermont is the third most intelligent state. The state has an high average IQ of 102.2. The state also has the lowest percentage of its population that doesn’t have a high school diploma or GED (5.5%) meaning that most of the population is educated and therefore more likely to have a higher IQ
North Dakota ranks fourth, with an average IQ of 103.8. North Dakota also has high graduation rates, at 93.62%. Along with the high education standards, those living in North Dakota earn more GPD per capita than many other states, earning $66,184.
Minnesota ranks as the fifth smartest state. The average IQ in this state is 103.7. Only 5.8% of the population doesn’t have a high school diploma or GED, and the average SAT score is 1225, one of the highest figures in America. On top of that, Minnesota has increased graduation rates of 94.13%.
Montana ranks as the sixth smartest state in America with an average IQ of 103.4. Montana is another high-achieving state for SATs, with an average score of 1206.
Maine is seventh on the list; with an average IQ 103.4. The state also has the joint lowest % of the population with no high school diploma or GED (5.5%).
Iowa is the eighth most intelligent state. Iowa has a high average IQ of 103.2, and an average graduation rate (93.32%). This, combined with a high average SAT score of 1196, makes Iowa one of the country's most intelligent states.
Connecticut is the ninth smartest state in America with an average IQ of 103.1.
Wisconsin is the tenth smartest state with an IQ of 102.9. Across all of the American states, on average, 9.2% of people don’t have a high school diploma or GED, in Wisconsin, this figure is only 6.3%, so much less.
