NEARLY A QUARTER OF AMERICANS KEEP SECRETS FROM LIVE-IN PARTNER

Do you tell your partner everything? For some folks, honesty is always the best policy, but it turns out, a lot of people are okay with keeping secrets from the one they love. New research reveals that nearly 25% of Americans have kept a secret from their partner when moving in together.

A survey of 2-thousand U.S. adults who live with their partner finds:

  • Millennials are most likely to keep some things confidential when shacking up (33%), followed by Gen Z (27%), while baby boomers are the least likely of all generations (11%).
  • A third of those who’ve kept secrets from their S.O. didn’t share them for more than a year and nearly half (48%) still haven’t confessed theirs.
  • While two-thirds (68%) do feel guilty for hiding a few things, less than half (43%) plan to spill all their secrets to their partner.
  • About 20% of those who kept secrets from their live-in love think their partner did the same and 52% think they’re still hiding something.
  • The top secrets people keep are details about past relationships (26%), doing something they know their partner would get upset about (20%) and spending habits (19%).
  • When they started living together, 31% of couples say they moved in with each other gradually, without having an official conversation about it.
  • Almost three-quarters (74%) of couples living together now have a pet, 48% got it together and 35% had a pet before they got together with their partner.
  • More than half (53%) of those who owned a pet before meeting their partner say their pet had to show signs of approval before their partner got the green light to move in. Now, 78% of them see their partner as their pet’s co-parent.
  • That’s great now, while everything is going great in the relationship, but it could be tricky if the couple splits up. Especially since 56% of respondents confess they don’t have a plan for things like splitting memberships up and moving out if they end up breaking up.
