HOW MANY SWEETS & TREATS AMERICANS EAT DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Are festive treats your favorite part of the holiday season? A new survey suggests you’re in good company, as 48% of respondents confess they’ve attended a holiday party just for the desserts and 43% have stayed at an event for the desserts and then left.

Today (November 13th) is National Sea Salt Caramel Day and in honor of this sweet holiday, a new poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults reveals Americans’ love for treats, especially at this time of year.

  • The top activity that brings back the childlike wonder of the holidays is indulging their sweet tooth (56%), more than opening presents (52%) or playing in the snow (49%).
  • For eight in 10, indulging in festive desserts brings back the best memories of holidays when they were growing up.
  • The holiday season is when 76% are most likely to treat themselves to sweets.
  • The top reason people give into cravings at the end of the year include they only buy their favorite sweets this time of year (64%), and that it’s tradition that they only make their favorite treat for the holidays at the end of the year (57%).
  • About half (48%) admit they’ve hidden their favorite treats so they didn’t have to share with anyone.
  • During the holiday season, people eat an average of 26 cookies, 25 pieces of candy or chocolate, 12 slices of pie, as well as 13 each of brownies, caramels, cupcakes and slices of cake.
  • Winter is the best season for flavors, according to 46% of respondents.
  • The top winter flavor is gingerbread (54%), followed by salted caramel (47%), peppermint (43%), maple (40%) and pumpkin spice (30%).
