STUDY: MOST NEWLYWEDS WANT A DOWN PAYMENT FOR WEDDING GIFT

Registering for china, linens and kitchen appliances has been a long-standing wedding tradition, but new research reveals today’s newlyweds would like to change that. According to a survey from Realtor.com, 85% of those who’ve created a wedding registry in the last two years would have preferred to get money for a down payment on a home instead of a physical gift.

The survey finds:

  • If they could do it again, 80% of newlyweds say they would include an option on their registry for people to be able to gift them money to help with home buying expenses.
  • Many brides and grooms feel stuck in a traditional gift-giving cycle, with 82% of newlyweds saying they felt obligated to register for traditional presents, like home furnishings and dishes. And 53% say they felt very obligated to do so.
  • As a result, 88% of respondents ended up registering for gifts they didn’t really want.
  • Just over a third (35%) registered for wedding gifts they didn’t want, but planned to return them for money to use on what they actually want.
  • Nearly three-quarters (72%) of those who’ve recently created a wedding registry included options for people to contribute financially to a specific big-ticket item, like a honeymoon.
  • Eight in 10 of those polled say they’ve felt obligated to buy a traditional gift for a wedding they attended, while 70% of wedding guests say they prefer to buy a traditional gift.
  • But 16% would prefer to give money to be used toward a home down payment.
