Boob Jobs No Longer Most Popular Plastic Surgery

Move over breast augmentation, liposuction has taken over as the world’s most popular cosmetic surgery, according to a new report. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s new data shows that lipo, a contouring procedure that uses suction to remove excess fat, made up 14.8% of all cosmetic surgeries performed around the world.

The research reveals:

  • More than 1.9-million liposuction procedures were done globally in 2021, an increase of about 21% from the previous year.
  • Fewer people are getting boob jobs, in part because of growing concerns about implants’ links to cancer, with breast augmentation falling to account for just over 13% of cosmetic surgeries performed worldwide.
  • Dr. Gianluca Campiglio, a plastic surgeon in Italy and the reports editor, notes a sharp jump in the number of patients who want to have their breast implants removed. Demand for that procedure has grown almost 50% globally in the last four years.
  • The total number of surgical procedures increased by more than 33% between 2017 and 2021, while non-surgical procedures - the most popular being Botox - rose by more than 54% in the same period.
  • There were more than 30-million surgical and non-surgical procedures done in 2021, an increase of 19.3% from the previous year.
  • Rhinoplasty and abdominoplasty - or nose jobs and tummy tucks - are among the most popular procedures.
  • Eyelid surgery was the third-most common procedure in the world in 2021 and the most popular for men.
  • The world’s quickest growing form of plastic surgery is thigh lifts, up over 53% from 2020.
  • The use of hyaluronic acid, commonly used as a facial filler, has also seen a “notable increase” of over 30%.
  • The U.S. has the most cosmetic surgeons in the world, and the approximately 7-thousand surgeons did nearly a quarter of the procedures done worldwide, followed by Brazil (8.9%) and Japan (5.7%).
