We teach little kids to call 911 only in an emergency, but a six-year-old girl in Collins, Mississippi, dialed 911 to deliver a special message. Mylah Santa Maria told the dispatcher, “I need y’all to tell the sheriff that I love him and I love y’all.”
A transcript of the call shows the dispatcher assured the little girl, “I will make sure that I get that to him, okay?” And she kept her word, delivering the message to Covington County Sheriff Darrell Perkins, who was so moved by Mylah’s call that he came by her house to meet her face-to-face.
And he didn’t come empty-handed, he brought Mylah some gifts, including a basket full of school supplies and a special Sheriff’s Department challenge coin as a thank you. “Everybody at the sheriff’s department said we’ve got to find out who this little girl is,” Perkins said. Before he left, the soon-to-be first grader gave him a hug and a special gift of her own - a drawing of a heart for the sheriff to keep.
