I've ridden Splash Mountain at Disney World a number of times and had no idea that it was based on a controversial movie "Song Of The South". Literally NO idea, all that I knew was that the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" was part of the ride. Well that and the big drop at the end. I also had no idea that you couldn't find the movie "Song of The South" anywhere because it was so controversial. All that said, the original "Splash Mountain" is going away and it will be completely re-imagined after "The Princess And The Frog".
There was a petition on Change.org that was signed by over 20,000 people to change the rides theme from "Song of The South" to "Princess And The Frog" and that petition clearly worked. Both Disneyland and Disney World's Magic Kingdom are home to the ride and they will both be redone.
Personally, I think it's about time that Tiana got some shine in the Disney Parks. For now, there is no timeline as to when the ride will be re-imagined but Disney imagineers are getting to work very soon.
