One Question is a snapchat talk show that sees to get live answers to one question per week. For episode 20, they asked "How Long Should Sex Last?" The respondents answers were honest and funny, though they stuck in a range of 20 minutes - 1.5 hours; though one man did say 10 seconds. First of all, yikes, second, just throw the whole man out! That's a pretty wide range, so what is the actual answer?
According to a study by Penn State, "good sex" lasts minutes, not hours. The study surveyed 50 U.S. and Canadian sex therapists that were members of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research. This society includes psychologists, physicians, social workers, marriage/family therapists, and nurses who have collectively seen thousands of patients over several decades. What they found was that the average therapist responded with four ranges for heterosexual couples: "too short" 1-2 minutes, "adequate" 3-7 minutes, "desirable 7-13 minutes", and "too long" 10-30 minutes. It should be noted, that these ranges are for penetration, and do not include foreplay. Another study was done that found that "female orgasms usually result after 20 minutes of a combination of direct, gentle, and extended massage - by hand, tongue, or sex toy - of women's whole bodies and genitals, especially on the visible clitoris." This study and others also noted that most women don't orgasm as a result of penetration alone. The average woman needs a good make out session and clitoral stimulation in order to achieve orgasm.
So how long should sex last? For heterosexual aim for about 10-20 minutes of foreplay and 7-13 minutes of penetration.
