...SUMMARY...
THE SHORT LIVED TORNADO INITIALLY TOUCHED DOWN NEAR THE
INTERSECTION OF SOUTH ST AND PUCKET ST, DOWNING SEVERAL LARGE TREES
IN A FIELD. IT HAD A DISCONTINUOUS PATH AS IT TRAVELED TO THE
EAST-NORTHEAST ACROSS A WOODED AREA WHERE IT CREATED POCKETS OF
TREE DAMAGE. IT THEN TOUCHED DOWN AGAIN JUST NORTH OF THE INTERSECTION
OF FLANDERS RD AND NATHAN HALE DR WHERE IT DAMAGED POWER LINES AND
THEN AGAIN MOVED THROUGH A WOODED AREA. AT LEAST 50 TREES WERE
DAMAGED IN THIS AREA, WITH MANY HAVING THEIR TOPS SHEARED OFF.
OVER A DOZEN TREES WERE BLOWN DOWN. IT APPEARS THE TORNADO
DISSIPATED QUICKLY AFTER THAT AS NO OTHER SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE WAS
OBSERVED FURTHER TO THE NORTHEAST. THERE WAS ALSO NO DAMAGE TO ANY
OF THE HOMES IN THE AREA. TWO RESIDENTS REPORTED HEARING THE
TORNADO WARNING, MOVING TO SAFETY IN THEIR BASEMENT AND THEN
ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER HEARING A LOUD WIND THAT LASTED JUST MOMENTS.
THE TORNADO IS ESTIMATED TO HAVE BEEN ON THE GROUND NO MORE THAN
90 SECONDS.
WE WANT TO THANK CT DEMHS OFFICIALS, LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN COVENTRY,
AND THE RESIDENTS WHO WERE IMPACTED FOR ASSISTANCE ON THE SURVEY. WE
ALSO APPRECIATE THE DRONE FOOTAGE PROVIDED BY NBC CONNECTICUT WHICH
GREATLY HELPED IN IDENTIFYING ADDITIONAL DAMAGE NOT EASILY REACHED
VIA GROUND SURVEY.
