Americans Expected To Spend $35.7 Billion On Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is less than two weeks away and if you’re one of the 84% of U.S. adults who plans to celebrate the holiday this year, it’s time to shop. According to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey, Americans plan to spend $35.7-billion on Mother’s Day this year, which is almost $4-billion more than last year’s $31.7-billion, which was a record high.

The survey finds consumers expect to spend $274.02 per person, the highest amount in the survey’s 20-year history. That’s up from the previous high of $245.76 in 2022. For those who are celebrating, 57% will be buying presents for a mom or stepmom, 23% are buying for a wife, and 12% for a daughter.

As for what they’re planning to buy:

  • The most popular gifts are flowers (74%), greeting cards (74%), and special outings like dinner or brunch (60%).
  • Nearly half (46%) of those polled are also looking at subscription boxes for a present.
  • Americans will also be spending a total of $7.8-billion on jewelry, $5.6-billion on special outings and $4-billion on those dinner and brunch outings.
  • When buying a gift, respondents say it’s most important to find items that are unique or different (47%) or things that create a special memory (42%).
